This first cake was for my niece's baptism. I am really not happy with how it turned out, but it did taste wonderful. This was a true case of what could go wrong, did.
The problems that led to me to having trouble with the cake:
  1. I decorated it in my sister's church kitchen, 1200 miles from my home
  2. My son got sick on the way and it took an extra day to get there, giving me 2 hours to assemble and decorate
  3. My son got sick right before we got to the church for me to decorate the cake, cutting into my 2 hours
  4. I didn't have the needed ingredients to make my no-fail buttercream, so I used cream cheese icing, which slid off the cake
  5. The motor on my hand mixer burned out while making the icing
  6. The wings broke off my bees
I would really like to redo this cake, because I know I could make it look better. However, it was a very tasty strawberry cake and the cream cheese icing really complimented the cake.
This second cake was a sheet cake for a bridal shower. I hate to do sheet cakes, or any square cake because I have a lot of trouble icing them. However, I was very happy with the results of this cake.
I used a new vanilla cake recipe: Magnolia Bakery's Vanilla Cupcake recipe* it was delicious! I did double the vanilla, and since I made it in 9x13 pans instead of cupcakes, I discovered I needed to turn the temperature down to 325 degrees to keep the edges from browning before the center cooked. I'm not sure how long I baked it , but I think it was about 40 minutes. I will be making that recipe again.
I used daisy cutters to make the fondant daisies in various sizes. I used buttercream for the base icing, swirls, and writing. I am not great at writing on cakes, but I practiced on parchment several times before writing on the cake and ended up being happy with the results.
*I don't want to violate any copywrite laws, but you can click the link to go to the recipe I used.

If you clicked on the link to the cupcake recipe within 10 minutes of me publishing my post, it may have taken you to the wrong recipe. I think I have it straight now though.

I love the sheet cake. Yes, I plan to attend the cake club in Georgetown. My Wilton instructor is over it. I believe she mentioned the first meeting will be a demo on Cali Lillies. I've known about the one at the church here in Lexington but I think my kids would feel comfortable being in the library since I have to bring them with me. I'll be missing the first meeting on 6/15 because of VBS but will attend next month. Hope to see ya there.

I adore strawberry cake with cream cheese icing- yum!!! I'm not sure what it was supposed tot look like, but it was a recognizable bee hive to me.

Your sheet cake turned out wonderful- great job!

Your sheet cake turned out well and lovely. I do have the same problem with writing on my cakes too... but I believe that one was wonderful.
A question for you.. "I bake my 9x13" at 180C for more than an hour or more, how do you suggest I bake it at less time?"

Comments:

Abimbola- I converted 180C to F and came up with 356F. If that is correct, that is the temperature I normally bake cakes. You may be filling the 9x13 too full, or your oven temperature may not be properly calibrated, causing you to need to bake the cake longer.

I have found that denser cakes, like a pound cake, usually do need to bake longer than lighter cakes. You could try baking at 375F (190C, I think) and see if that reduces the time without overbaking the cake. I hope this helps.

Rachel

I think the beehive cake turned out cute, especially since you had all that trouble! Love the sheetcake as well. Thanks for sharing the Magnolia recipe with us. I love it when people can recommend recipes, that way you're not just making an unknown. =o)
